Can I file my Living Will at the county courthouse

Experts claim that 50% of all Living Wills will not be found in the event of emergency, mainly because the declarant (the patient) is not competent to communicate at that time. In many instances, family members do not know how to locate a family member's Living Will.

The next few years 80% of the population of the United States will live in areas where the County Recorder will have an electronic public access system. If a Living Will is on file at the Recorder's Office, access can be obtained by any medical facility throughout the nation in a matter of seconds. However, it is important to remember that the patient or proxy must communicate where the documents are filed for this service to be useful.
