The first advance directives were designed by the organization Choice in Dying
(now the Partnership for Caring: America's Voices for the Dying) in 1967, although
the idea did not gain popularity until the parents of Karen Ann Quinlan won a
long legal battle to disconnect her from respiratory support in 1976.
Some 75% of Americans favor advance directives - although only 30-35% actually
write them.
An estimated 35% of advance directives cannot be found when needed.
