Service project on tap for lawyers: Ohio State Bar Foundation announces 2009 Fellows

COLUMBUS – (June 19, 2009) Ohio State Bar Foundation (OSBF) President Stephen E. Chappelear is pleased to announce the 2009 Fellows who joined the Foundation.

Membership in the Foundation is an honor extended to those lawyers and judges who adhere to the highest ideals of the legal profession and are dedicated to serving their communities.

Each year the Foundation invites civic minded lawyers become part of a Fellows Class. Over the course of 18 months, the Class then works on a project that promotes the Foundation’s mission of promoting public understanding of the law and improvements in the justice system throughout Ohio. Class projects have included educating Somali immigrants about their rights and responsibilities as new citizens and teaching third grade students the concept of justice. Just last month, the Foundation launched www.mymissiontranstion.com, an interactive Web site developed to support foster youth preparing to age out of care in Ohio. The justice system works better when it is understood by everyone.

Through grants, the Foundation supports nonprofit organizations, government agencies and bar associations for projects that advance our mission like the Law & Leadership Institute. This initiative was established to sustain a “pipeline” into the legal profession for disadvantaged students from underserved schools and economically disadvantaged areas into the legal profession. The Law & Leadership Institute is a collaborative effort between the Ohio State Bar Association, the Ohio Center for Law Related Education, the Ohio State Bar Foundation, Ohio’s law schools, Ohio’s metropolitan bar associations and city school districts. The Law & Leadership Institute also has the support of Supreme Court of Ohio Chief Justice Thomas J. Moyer.
