Class of 2006 - Keys to the Court Room

The 2006 Fellows Class members demonstrated limitless compassion, understanding and eagerness to help working Ohioans who are unable to provide the basic necessities for their families.

During the initial research, Class members learned an array of thought-provoking facts:
  • The income of the 20 million poorest families in the U.S. equals the income of the 13,000 richest families; in other words, the poorest 80 million people are living on the income of the richest 52,000 people.
  • In 1970, .01% of taxpayers earned 70 times above the average family; in 1998, that segment earned 300 times the average family income.
  • In 2003, the official poverty thresholds in the U.S. were $9,573 for an individual and $18,979 for a family of four.

The Fellows Class combined forces with legal aid providers from across Ohio to help self-represented litigants learn about basic court procedure before they enter the courtroom. The project, Keys to the Courtroom, included materials for pro se litigants as part of the newly redesigned Ohio Legal Services Web site,www.ohiolegalservices.org , and a brochure for judges, clerks of court, librarians and others who work with pro se litigants.

Class of 2005 - With Liberty and Justice for all... Somalis in Ohio

The 2005 Fellows Class welcomed the world to Ohio's doorstep through its creation of "With Liberty and Justice for All...Somalis in Ohio." This Fellows Class project is a compact disk-based program intended to help Somali refugees learn their basic legal rights and responsibilities as Ohio residents. With content researched by Fellows Class members, the CD was produced with the help of members of the Ohio Somali community, who appear on the CD and explain the concepts in Somali. The Franklin County Department of Job and Family Services supported this project with human and financial resources, particularly in the field testing and and distribution of this tool throughout its network. The release of this project is a collaborative effort between the Foundation, the Department of Job and Family Services and the leadership in the Somali community. "With Liberty and Justice for All..." provides a template for similar CD programs in other languages to serve multiple immigrant communities in Ohio.

Class of 2004 - Legal Information for Nonprofit Corporations

The "lucky 7th" Fellows Class was the Foundation's largest, with 43 members. Identifying at the onset the needs of people who are trying to start nonprofit organizations for various philanthropic needs - people who do not have the resources to retain lawyers on an ongoing basis or who might not need to launch brand new nonprofit organizations - the Fellows Class developed a Web site to help these fledgling efforts access Internet and other resources.

"LINC Ohio" - Legal Information for Nonprofit Corporations - was created with the help of the Ohio Attorney General's office, the Ohio Secretary of State's office, the Ohio Association of Nonprofit Organizations and a variety of other nonprofit professionals.

LINC Ohio was built to help emerging nonprofits more easily find Internet resources that will help them navigate legal and management issues. By understanding basic concepts, these individuals and organizations can more effectively use lawyers, accountants and other professionals to meet their needs.

After a trial period during which nonprofit organizations across Ohio tested the site, the Ohio Association of Nonprofit Organizations (OANO) now hosts the site and is creating a statewide educational program in conjunction with LINC Ohio.

    Class of 2003 - It's My Life... I have a choice.

According to the Ohio Department of Education, 16% of today's incoming Ohio freshmen likely will not graduate from high school. The 2003 Fellows Class created an early, law-related means of intervention to affect the personal behavior of troubled and at-risk students and positively improve the chances for Ohio's youth.

Working to encourage and empower Ohio students to make their best choices, bearing in mind the possible law-related consequences of their personal actions, the Class created a compact disk-based, peer mentoring curriculum titled "It's my life…" for mentoring programs in juvenile courts, schools, youth groups and other settings.

With this tool, teen-aged students, parents, educators, juvenile courts and youth service providers can mentor 5th-graders and others using videotaped interviews with teens who have made choices that had negative legal consequences. Other materials on the CD are designed to help novice mentors develop a meaningful mentoring relationship. The project was launched at the beginning of 2005 to enthusiastic response across Ohio.

    CLASS OF 2002
Light the Way: Don't Leave Your Loved Ones in the Dark

Taking the Foundation to another corner of the legal field, the 2002 Fellows Class focused its efforts on advance directives: the legal designation of a decision-maker for a person in a health care crisis before a crisis occurs.

In their project "Light the Way: Don't Leave Your Loved Ones in the Dark," the 2002 Fellows Class collaborated with social service providers, attorneys and government agencies to encourage adult Ohioans to discuss their health care preferences and end-of-life issues with their loved ones. An estimated 2 million Ohioans were reached by this public education campaign.

Project partner Ohio Hospice & Palliative Care Organization (www.ohpco.org) is now carrying the torch, lighting the way for future generations of Ohioans by sponsoring the annual Light the Way Month in August, including the annual Light the Way Day at the Ohio State Fair.

Class of 2001 - Did Not! Did Too!

The 2001 Fellows Class was concerned that the distinct learning level of 3rd graders and the absence of age-appropriate teaching materials about the justice system make it a challenge to study for state-mandated achievement tests. Thought led to action for this Fellows Class, which created a full-color, 40-page storybook about a trip to a courthouse, titled Did not! Did too!

Applying the talents of a professional writer and a professional illustrator for the task - and in collaboration with teachers and children across Ohio - the Fellows Class didn't stop with producing the storybook and companion curriculum guide. Thanks to generous donors from around the state, the Foundation distributed free teaching sets of the storybook to 3rd grade classrooms and elementary school libraries throughout Ohio.

In addition to teaching citizenship and government topics, educators are using Did not! Did too! in counseling and mediation programs, reading programs and libraries, juvenile and family courts, CASA/GAL programs, etc. The guide is especially designed for teachers, with ready-made activities, puzzles, and Internet resources.

Ohio Governor Bob Taft recognized the Foundation and the 2001 Fellows Class for creating the storybook, focusing on our society's way of peacefully resolving disputes, as part of Did not! Did too! Day on Oct. 24, 2002.

Did not! Did too! continues to be available from the Foundation. See the Publications page on this web site for an order form; or contact the Foundation at osbf@osbf.net.

    CLASS OF 2000

    Ohio Legal Information Source (OLIS)

The 2000 Foundation Fellows Class year straddled the birth of the New Millennium and the Foundation's 50th Anniversary. Apropos of both, the Fellows Class chose to create the Ohio Legal Information Source (OLIS), an online database of programs, publications and other resources that promote public understanding of the law and improvements in the justice system throughout Ohio.

    > Because no mechanism existed for program providers to find out what ideas had been created and implemented in other parts of Ohio, the Fellows Class discovered that resources were being expended unnecessarily across the state to generate the same programs and publications elsewhere. Also, the impact of a significant program that was developed in a single location might not stretch beyond that location because no one else in the state knew of its existence.

    > In creating OLIS, the 2000 Fellows Class has established a valuable network of more than 300 resources and program providers that further the mission of the Ohio State Bar Foundation.

A June 2001 workshop introduced OLIS to the public. That gathering of public and law librarians, educators, bar association leaders and government and social service agency representatives explored a wide range of possible collaborations and community partnerships to generate and improve these types of initiatives. Although the 2000 Fellows Class completed its work on OLIS, the Foundation looks forward to partnering with like-minded organizations to update this database in the years to come.

    CLASS OF 1999

More Than Sex, Drugs & Money: Reporting on the Legal System

The 1999 Foundation Fellows Class recognized the success of its predecessor's project in advancing the latter part of the Foundation's mission, promoting improvements in the justice system throughout Ohio. This Fellows Class made an important decision that set the direction of future Fellows Classes: selection of a project that was independent of prior projects, to establish an individual identity for that Fellows Class.

    > In response to concerns about the manner in which reporting impacts the public's understanding of the law, the 1999 Fellows Class learned that most journalists do not receive specific training that would prepare them to understand and report accurately on the justice system.

As a result, the 1999 Fellows Class developed a bibliography and model curriculum designed to help teach college journalism students the basics of how to cover the legal system. The bibliography, which included the most up-to-date Internet resources on the topic, and the curriculum outline were intended for use as a one-day seminar or as part of a larger course.

    > In February 2000, the Fellows Class tested the model curriculum, titled More Than Sex, Drugs & Money: Reporting on the Legal System. Some 60 college journalism students and professors from across Ohio attended the event, which brought together journalists, professors, attorneys, and judges to explain the fundamentals of the legal system and to discuss real-world situations the students might encounter as professional reporters.

    > The keynote address by Richard Carelli, who covers the United State Supreme Court for the Associated Press, was taped and nationally broadcast on CSPAN throughout April 2000 as part of the America & The Courts series.

    CLASS OF 1998

    The Ohio Jury Conference

In determining the focus of the very first Class project, the members of the Fellows Class of 1998 noted the important role that jurors play in the justice system. They also recognized the opportunity that jury service provides for members of the public to develop a clearer understanding of the justice system.

    > As a result, the inaugural 1998 Foundation Fellows Class conceived, planned and produced the first gathering of Ohio jury managers - jury commissioners, administrators, bailiffs, clerks, reporters, judges and other court personnel - to exchange information, discuss challenges and brainstorm solutions.

    > Nearly 150 participants attended the daylong conference in April 1999, which included a panel of former jurors, educational seminars and remarks of support by Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice Thomas J. Moyer.

    > At the conclusion of the 1999 Ohio Jury Conference: Deliberations on Jury Service, attendees asked the Foundation to sponsor a second conference the following year. Instead, the Foundation convened conference participants, 1998 Fellows Class members and other jury managers across the state to plan for the continuation of the jury-related work begun by the Class. The Foundation also assisted in the formation of the Ohio Jury Management Association, which was incorporated in March 2000, to continue these efforts.

OJMA is a professional association formed specifically to promote and enhance jury service in Ohio. It is the only association of its kind in the country. The Foundation and OJMA jointly sponsored the 2000 Ohio Jury Conference, and the Foundation awarded OJMA a grant to produce the Third Annual Ohio Jury Management Conference in 2001.
